IP Justice's Robin Gross Named to United Nations Internet Governance Forum (IGF) Advisory Group

19 May 2006

IP Justice participated at the United Nations Internet Governance Forum (IGF) "Open Consultations" on 19 May 2006 in Geneva, Switzerland to advocate for protecting civil liberties in cyberspace and encouraging access to knowledge via the Internet.

The UN sponsored IGF is the main outcome of the 2003-2005 UN World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) and is charged with discussing the main public policy issues related to Internet governance, in order to foster the Internet’s sustainability, robustness, security, stability and development.

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan selected a group of 47 experts from governments, business, and civil society to prepare a substantive agenda and program for the inaugural meeting of the Internet Governance Forum, which is to take place in Athens, Greece from 30 October - 2 November 2006.

IP Justice Executive Director Robin Gross was named as one of the 7 members representing civil society on the IGF Advisory Group.  The IGF also includes 20 representatives from government, 10 from the business sector, and 9 from the ICANN system.  Unfortunately, most of the names put forward by civil society were not selected by the UN; and those public-interest-oriented members who were named to the IGF's Advisory Group may face an uphill battle against those who view the Internet as more of a threat than an opportunity for human development.

The first meeting of the UN IGF Advisory Group takes place on 22 and 23 May 2006 in Geneva, Switzerland.  The forum is chaired by Nitin Desai, the Special Advisor to Kofi Annan on WSIS and Markus Kummer serves as the Secretariat's Executive Director.
