WIPO
Debates Treaty on Broadcasting and Webcasting
Mandatory Minimum Set of Copyright Limitations Also Examined
(Geneva)
IP Justice is in Geneva
to participate at the 13th session of the Standing Committee
on
Copyrights and Related Rights (SCCR) at the World Intellectual Property
Organization (WIPO). WIPO is the United
Nations
Specialized Agency that writes intellectual property treaties. The main agenda item at this meeting is a
proposed treaty to create broad new rights for broadcasting companies
over
broadcast signals. The United States
has proposed that the treaty also regulate Internet transmissions of
media, or Webcasting.
The other main discussion item at this
meeting is the
proposal by Chile
to examine a mandatory minimum set of limitations and exceptions to
copyright
that would extend to all Member States. IP Justice addressed the
SCCR committee with statements on both
issues.
